Having battled my way through the technological barrier of creating a blog (I spent the first two days poking my freshly inked quill into the USB slot) I find myself wondering where to begin. I have spent a good deal of time recently working on the Splats adaption of Midsummer Nights Dream and, as I always find when working with Shakespeare, it is the language that I fall in love with. This is presumably why Shakespeare has remained so popular for so long. It was quite a struggle to write and adaption of this play because I wanted to include all my favourite bits which, as it turns out, is most of the play. How can I cut the line “A lion among ladies is a most dreadful thing”? Or ” The more I love, the more he hateth me”? I try to keep as much language as possible, but each original line brings three friends and before you know it, your slimmed down adaptation is and hour long and requires a week long residency to work with.
But I think I got there in the end. One thing is for certain. I am resolved to fit some of my favourite words and phrases into my everyday life. I am working on my personal favourite “cankerblossom” at the moment.
